Green Sugar

The Company

Green Sugar is a German engineering company developing processes for the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into highly pure sugar and other valuable biochemicals. Those products are renewable and biobased, and are an essential building block for the global bioeconomy. As a platform technology producing sugar, Green Sugar provides the key solution for a world seeking fossil-based alternatives. It serves as the starting point for biobased fermentation products like biopolymers, biofuels, pharmaceuticals, and speciality chemicals – based on renewable, non-edible biomass residues. Lignocellulosic biomass is the core starting material of a biobased economy. The Green Sugar technology breaks down biomass into its main carbohydrate fractions based on cellulose, hemicelluloses as well as lignin, which are used in various subsequent down-stream processes. Founded in 2007, Green Sugar develops processes for the saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass, by applying cascaded use of biomass principles, and focusing on energy efficiency, a closed catalytic process cycle, and protection of the natural environment.

Advisory Board

Dr. Jürgen Puls

Before his retirement in 2011 Dr. Jürgen Puls was Director and Professor of the Thünen-Institute of Wood Research in Hamburg/Germany. He has published 225 papers, mainly in refereed journals.

He is specialized in the following fields: Chemical characterization of lignocellulosic materials, enzymology of lignocellulose biodegradation, pretreatment of lignocellulosic materials, optimization of component separation processes, biodegradation of cellulose acetate, lignocellulose biorefineries, lignin utilization.

Cooperations

Green Sugar entered into an exclusive engineering partnership with the German engineering company ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions (TKIS), known for its expertise in process technologies and system engineering. Together, Green Sugar and TKIS launched a strategic technology industrialization partnership, which collaboratively offers its technology services to the customer base of Green Sugar and TKIS.

The cooperation between Green Sugar and TKIS results in the amalgamation of the process know-how in the field of biomass separation and saccharification, provided by Green Sugar, and the system engineering expertise and down-stream technologies of Green Sugar in the field of biochemical processes.

In order to supply the growing global biopolymers market, Green Sugar teamed up with Platon Solutions, an innovative German bioplastics design and bioplastics solutions provider.

Network

Green Sugar is part of the BioEconomy Cluster in Halle / Germany, which is a Leading Edge Cluster of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It assembles partners from industry and research working on the use of non-food biomass in a bioeconomy.

Together with its partner Platon Solutions, Green Sugar collaborates with various enterprises and research institutes in the biopolymer sector through the LC2Biopolymers Network.
